Helen and Douglas House        Helen & Douglas House is a registered charity providing respite and end of life care for children and young adults with life-shortening conditions, as well as support and friendship for the whole family. The two hospice houses are bright, vibrant and positive places, where the emphasis is on living life to the full, even when that life may be short.
There are many families in the UK who are caring for a child or young adult who has a life-shortening condition. Caring for someone with such a condition, often for 24 hours a day, seven days a week, over many years, can put an immeasurable strain upon the family. And whilst families willingly invest love, energy and care, life becomes governed by the relentless timetable of nursing and medical needs. Relationships can suffer, careers may have to be abandoned, healthy brothers and sisters can feel left out and regular family activities and holidays can be rare. Families can often feel alone and afraid in their grief.

In 2001, the UK Trust was keen to use what it had learnt to help people in other countries and the Trust expanded into New Zealand and the Republic of Ireland, as well as assisting organisations in other countries (such as Brazil and Portugal) to fight the disease locally.
Today our links extend across many related charities, medical organisations, hospitals and government departments as well as the media, grant-making trusts and leading companies.

Over the last 25 years incidence has doubled and this rise has been linked to decline in sperm count. Though curable today, at least a third of all patients delay seeking treatment because of lack of knowledge or embarrassment, making treatment more complicated and distressing.  In the last 20 years, world-wide cases of prostate cancer have increased dramatically. With the decline in deaths from lung cancer, prostate cancer is becoming the most important cancer issue in men.

PSP                                         PSP, or Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, is a degenerative disease involving the death of selected neurons (nerve cells) in the brain. Over a period of time, usually some years, this can affect progressively balance, mobility, vision, speech and the ability to swallow. There can also be other symptoms, as PSP is a very individual disease.   When British born actor and musician Dudley Moore lost his courageous battle against PSP in March 2002, many thousands of people worldwide became more aware of this little known but devastating disease. More recently, the mother of Olympic athlete Sebastian Coe suffered and died from PSP. Leading neurologists consider that there could be as many as 10,000 cases of PSP in the UK today.   The cause of PSP is still unknown, but there may be a genetic, as well as an environmental, component. Considerable research is being undertaken at present to try to determine the cause of PSP, to develop more effective treatments and, ultimately, to find a cure.

Spinal Research                     Spinal Research is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to funding medical research around the world to develop reliable treatments for paralysis caused by a broken back or neck.  Every year more than 800 people in the UK and Ireland are paralysed following an injury to their spinal cord. Spinal Research raises money to fund research into clinical treatments as well as vital basic science research. Thanks to such pioneering research, paralysis can now be treated and we stand on the brink of applying therapies that will restore movement and feeling and transform the lives of paralysed people. The next stage of our Clinical Initiative, the demanding process of taking experimental proof of concept to the bedside – so-called translational science – will be our most expensive yet and funds are urgently needed to support this crucial research

Stroke                                     Each year over 130,000 people in England and Wales have a stroke. Of all people who suffer from a stroke, about a third are likely to die within the first 10 days, about a third are likely to make a recovery within one month and about a third are likely to be left disabled and needing rehabilitation. Stroke has a greater disability impact than any other medical condition. A quarter of a million people are living with long-term disability as a result of stroke in the UK.  The Stroke Association is the only national charity solely concerned with combating stroke in people of all ages. It funds research into prevention, treatment and better methods of rehabilitation, and helps stroke patients and their families directly through its Rehabilitation and Support Services. Whizz Kidz                    Like all children, disabled children need to move around independently and enjoy freedom to enable them to live full and active lives with their families and friends.  The NHS is often unable to provide the mobility equipment, training and advice that they need. Looking after a disabled child can increase the emotional and physical strain on families. Having to spend time and effort to obtain mobility equipment and support services is an additional stress that they really don't need. This is where Whizz-Kidz comes in. We provide customised wheelchairs, tricycles and other specialised mobility equipment, wheelchair training, information and advice to change the lives of disabled children across the UK.   We are also working to raise awareness of the need of these children so that they get the support they deserve from the general public and from the Government.
Independent mobility enables disabled children to experience the everyday things that many able-bodied children take for granted, often for the first time in their lives. Whether it's going to a mainstream school, joining in at sport or being able to play with friends and family, independence and freedom changes a disabled child's life, literally overnight.
